The shoulder is made up of many different structures, making it particularly vulnerable to injury. There are many causes of shoulder pain. At Health Odyssey Chiropractic, Chiropractor Dr Bradley Waterer can evaluate the source of your concern and create a plan to help you get rid of your discomfort.
Conditions That Can Result
There are many conditions that can result in shoulder pain such as impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tear/strain, adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), labrum tear and calcific tendonitis.
- Impingement Syndrome: Throwing a ball, playing tennis and swimming are examples of activities that result in a repetitive overhead movement. Along with bursitis and strains of the rotator cuff, they are the most common causes of impingement syndrome. If you have shoulder pain when performing an overhead movement, it may be due to this condition.
- Rotator Cuff Tear/Strain: A tear or strain of the rotator cuff can be caused by chronic overuse, trauma, poor biomechanics and pulling or lifting. It can be Grade 1, 2 or 3 depending on severity. The symptoms include sudden pain in the shoulder when performing lifting or overhead activities and spasms in the shoulder muscle.
- Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder): Shoulder pain that lasts for weeks and gradually stiffens as the pain resolves may be due to a frozen shoulder. Its causes include periods of immobilisation, arterial disease, trauma, cervical conditions or surgery.
- Labrum Tear: A labrum tear can be caused by ageing, trauma, chronic overuse, degeneration and weakness or instability of the shoulder. The symptoms involve a locking sensation or clunking sound along with pain when performing certain shoulder movements.
- Calcific Tendonitis: A deposit of calcium in the supraspinatus muscle can result from chronic shoulder dysfunction, a sedentary lifestyle or a strain of the supraspinatus muscle. The signs of it include a recurring shoulder complaint that is aggravated by performing overhead movements. If it is an acute episode, the pain is stabbing, whereas if it is chronic, the ache is constant. The discomfort worsens at night.
