Thoracic Spine Pain Relief in Bondi Junction

person with thoracic painIf you are experiencing back pain, it may involve the thoracic region, which starts at the base of your neck and extends down to your abdomen. It functions to protect the spinal cord while anchoring the rib cage, sitting between the cervical and lumbar areas of the spine.

Conditions that Can Cause Pain

There are several different conditions that primarily affect the thoracic spine. Chiropractor Dr Bradley Waterer is trained to evaluate these conditions and can recommend the appropriate treatments to help you recover your health.

  • Scoliosis: Scoliosis involves a rotational deformity of the spine and can have a functional or structural cause. A functional origin may be due to a leg length inequality or an imbalance of posture or muscles. The structural causes can be congenital malformations, anatomical abnormalities, neuromuscular issues, metabolic conditions and trauma. It can happen during infancy, during childhood and in adolescence. The symptoms of scoliosis include a spinal curve greater than 60 degrees that compresses nerves and causes cardiopulmonary complications. There is also muscle stiffness, back pain and unequal shoulder, pelvis or head levels involved.
  • Scheuermann’s Disease: This spinal disorder is caused by trauma that stunts growth, genetic predisposition, osteoporosis, malnutrition, scoliotic curvature and spondylolisthesis. Those who have it experience kyphosis, or an increased curvature of the thoracic spine and back pain that is dull, achy and intermittent stemming from various activities but that can be relieved by rest.
  • Costosternal Syndrome (Costochondritis): Also known as chest wall pain, this condition is an inflammation of costochondral cartilage. It can stem from strained joints, trauma and respiratory infections. The symptoms involve sharp, shooting pains in the front of the chest with pain that can refer into the back and stomach. The discomfort increases with sneezing, coughing or taking deep breaths.
  • Thoracic Degenerative Joint Disease: When joints degenerate due to poor posture, genetic or metabolic predisposition, abnormal biomechanics, trauma, repetitive forceful joint motions or fractures, it may be due to this disease. The signs include dull, achy pain in the joints that is slow to develop. There is stiffness in the morning though pain can be relieved by rest, and may refer up and down the spine and around the wall of the chest.
  • Facet Syndrome: When the facet joints of the spine become inflamed from poor posture, sprained joints, osteoarthritis, whiplash or rheumatoid arthritis, it results in facet syndrome. The symptoms of it include a deep, dull, intermittent pain that may refer up and down the spine or into the chest wall and tenderness in the inflamed joint or during rotation or extension.
